Course Management (When to use which club. Play smart golf and not high risk, high reward v.s. Straight & Short)
Sometimes shot selection can be confusing. Knowing which club to use and when can be the difference between a personal best or the worst round ever. Every club is specifically designed for a purpose.
This is a guide to help golfers improve their course management.
Firstly we discuss the different types of clubs and secondly, where to use them when you’re on the course.
In golf, you can use any club anywhere, but it’s essential to know how to manage which clubs to use appropriately.
Drivers are designed to provide the longest distance and typically are the largest golf clubs. These clubs are mainly used on the tee box.
(Men’s Average Distance 230 Yards, Women Average Distance 200 Yards)
Irons are golf clubs that most commonly range from 184.108.40.206.7.8 and 9. You will find yourself using an iron if you are less than 200yards from the green. The closer you get to the green, you will find yourself using higher-lofted irons.
(Men’s Average 120-190 Yards, Women’s Average 100-170 Yards)
Fairway Woods are typically used for hitting long shots. You will find yourself using one of these clubs to hit off the tee. The head of the club is hollow-bodied and is larger than other clubs. Some ask why they are called woods when they are made from metal. The reasoning behind this is that these clubs were made from wood up until the 80s. These clubs have a very low loft between 7-12 degrees, making it great for long-distance but not so great for hitting it high.
(Men’s Average 210 Yards, Women’s Average 180 Yards)
Hybrids are slowly becoming more and more popular. This club is a combination of fairway wood and an iron length shaft. The usually longer irons 3-4 tend to be replaced with hybrids. Hybrid clubs provide the best of both worlds.
(Men’s 3-Hybrid 170-220 Yards, Women’s 125-180 Yards)
(Men’s 4-hybrid 160-210 Yards, Women’s 120-170 Yards)
(Men’s 5-hybrid 150-200 Yards, Women’s 140-190 Yards)
